1. Project of the Federal Target Program “Studies and Developments in Higher-Priority Directions of Development of Scientific and Technological Complex of Russia in 2007-2012”

Since 2005, the Research Station RAS has been working on modernization of the system of active electromagnetic monitoring of stressed and deformed state of the Earth’s crust. This system was created by RS RAS in 1882 and has been operated by the Station since that year. The purpose of these works is to ensure electromagnetic monitoring of the Earth’s crust using modern equipment which provides acquisition of detailed information about earthquake focus and its precursors in seismically active regions of Russia and CIS countries.  The electromagnetic monitoring of the Earth’s crust is based on the method of far-field transient EM sounding as the most accurate and sensitive method to study the electric structure of rocks which form the Earth’s crust, their features and dynamic characteristics.

Within the frameworks of the Federal Target Program “Studies and Developments in Higher-Priority Directions of Development of Scientific and Technological Complex of Russia in 2007-2012”, the RS RAS submitted an application for participation in the project of the Federal Target Program and funding of the research activities on the subject “Creation of Modern System of Electromagnetic Monitoring of Stressed and Deformed State Processes in the Earth’s Crust of Seismically Active Regions”. In 2007-2008, RS RAS received the funding and concluded the state contract with the Federal Agency on Science and Innovations of Russia № 02.515.11.5014 dated April 5, 2007 on implementation of the abovementioned research activities.

In 2007-2008, according to the given contract, RS RAS together with “Molniya” Company, Moscow, Russia, conducted works on development of the draft of technical and operational documentation and produced ten model samples of modern receiving measuring stations of the system of electromagnetic monitoring. We also developed the draft of technical documentation for the electropulse system ЭИС-1000 designed to form probing current pulses in the Earth’s crust with the power and energy much higher than that of the ЭРГУ-600 plant operated by RS RAS.

In 2009, the measuring stations produced within the frameworks of the state contract were placed onto stationary and mobile measuring sites of the system of electromagnetic monitoring of the Earth’s crust operated in RS RAS instead of the old-fashioned single-channel stations КИЦ-М and ИКМ.

The works on further introduction of the powerful ЭИС-1000 system into the technology of electromagnetic monitoring were suspended due to considerable financial and material costs.

The developments within the frameworks of the state contract are protected by the patent of the Russian Federation for invention and by two utility model patents:
